French football legend and former UEFA president Michel Platini has fallen victim to a burglary at his private residence in the Bouches-du-Rhône region of southern France, near the town of Cassis. The incident was first reported by BFMTV.
According to Platini, the break-in occurred early Friday morning. At around 5:30 AM, he was awakened by noises coming from his garden. Upon inspection, he noticed a man dressed in black with a hood fleeing the property.
The intruder had broken into an outbuilding on the estate, where Platini kept a collection of his most treasured football trophies and personal memorabilia. Approximately 20 items were reported stolen, including medals and championship cups. The total value of the stolen items has yet to be assessed.
The Marseille Prosecutor’s Office has launched an official investigation into the robbery, classifying it as a burglary with aggravating circumstances.
Michel Platini is widely regarded as one of France’s most iconic footballers. He was awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or three consecutive times in 1983, 1984, and 1985. Platini captained the French national team during the 1980s and later served as UEFA President from 2007 to 2015. His second term ended due to a corruption investigation, though the charges were eventually dropped.
This isn’t the first time a football figure in France has been targeted. Earlier this year, Strasbourg midfielder Andrey Santos, on loan from Chelsea, had his home robbed during a Ligue 1 match against Lille. Thieves made off with jewelry worth £422,000.
